Ken Haar is a computer technology consultant and systems analyst who has been active in community affairs for over 20 years. He was elected twice to the Lincoln City Council as an At-Large representative (1989-1997) and served one year as its Chair. During his years on the Council, Ken called for a review of the City’s natural gas franchise, and asked the City to explore new fees to offset property taxes. He worked to expand retail zoning in both North and South Lincoln, and supported annexation of the Highlands with accompanying services such as fire, library and swimming pool. Ken led the initial effort to bring minor league baseball to Lincoln and was recognized as a leader who brought new ideas to the City. In 1993 the Lincoln Journal Star commented that “ Haar...brings a continuing fresh perspective to the City Council. He questions: he refuses to blindly accept the status quo. His ideas point to potential new directions...” Ken has served on numerous boards including the Lancaster County Board of Health, the Lincoln Mediation Center, and the Nebraska Sierra Club. For 15 years Ken taught chemistry, math, and physics in Omaha, Bronxville NY, and Lincoln. He left teaching to pursue a career in computer technology, and worked for several companies including US Life, the National Arbor Day Foundation, and TAG/TMI. He later formed his own company, Compliance at a Glance, Inc., which develops software for healthcare providers. Ken is also an inventor and a builder. He invented and produced BearHooks® Wilderness Food Hangers for campers and backpackers, and considers his recent planning and building of his home, with his own labor, as one of his proudest achievements. After moving to Lincoln when he was 14 from a small farming community in South Dakota, Ken attended Lincoln High, where he graduated as a Valedictorian. He attended U.N.L. and received a B.S. with “high distinction” in 1965 and earned an M.S. in Educational Administration in 1973. Ken is an avid outdoorsman and considers backpacking in the mountains as his favorite get-a-way. He currently lives in the country outside of Malcolm with his wife Chris. He has two sons and three grandchildren, with whom he enjoys spending considerable time. |
